The East Bay, and greater Bay Area, is full of amazing, creatives teaching wonderful hands-on workshops. These workshops are a great way to test, exercise or grow a skill or passion this summer. Whether you’re in need of getting your hands a little dirty and freeing your creativity, simply in search of something fun to do on a Saturday morning, or looking to learn something new with a friend, here are five amazing workshops you’ll want to look into this summer!
Handcraft Studio School in Emeryville, founded by Bay Area native and East Bay resident Marie Muscardini, has a whole slew of exciting workshops this summer. The full list is here and below are my favorites:
Personalized Letterpress Notecards, July 31st. This class is special because it’s held in Western Edition’s own Emeryville studio. You’ll work on a letterpress, learning to mix Pantone colors, take home hand-pressed designs, and get crafty with envelope linings and perfecting all the details to a personalized notecard.
Beginning Modern Calligraphy, August 13th. In this workshop led by Diva Pyari, artist and designer from the San Francisco Bay Area, and founder of LINEA CARTA: sustainable linens and stationery, all screen-printed by hand, you’ll learn everything you need to know about beginner’s calligraphy. From the alphabet to flourishes, you’ll even design a custom monogram that I’m sure you’ll want to put on everything from letters to bags. Enjoy treats, champagne and bites too!
Making A Net Bag, August 7th. I’ve been obsessed with these very European, and trending net bags. Use them to hold farmer’s market veggies and fruits, as a lunch sac, for a picnic in the park, or for groceries. They even make a cute wine bag. In this 4 hour workshop, you’ll learn basic knots and hear Sarah Pedlow’s amazing experience learning to make these net bags during her artist’s residency, in Iceland, where she learned net-making from a man who has been working in the fishing industry for over 25 years and has made nets since he was a boy!
Viv & Ingrid, one of my favorite Berkeley boutiques, is hosting a Summer Floral Design Class with Willene Design, July 30th. You’ll learn the basic floral types, techniques and design considerations when making a floral arrangement. Arrangements will have a mix of local and exotic florals. The perfect workshop for every fresh flower lover!
If you’re looking for a workshop today, it’s not too late to sign up for Kim Roth’s Watercolor and Brush Lettering Workshop in Alameda at Pippa & Co. You may remember Kim of Bright Room Studio from this exclusive interview. An Oakland resident, with major talent, if there’s someone you’ll want to learn lettering techniques from, it’s her. Perfect for birthday signs and pretty party invites, this class is for adults and kids over 10.
Other Bay Area workshops to check out:
