To kick off Cinco de Mayo and the weekend, we are taking you inside one of the area’s most gorgeously designed Mexican restaurants, Flores. Designed by one of our favorite firms, Hannah Collins Designs, we have the inside scoop from Hannah on the inspiration behind the decor plus little known details you need to know. Come inside: you’ll happily feel like you are south of the border… and see what to order too!
24 East: What did you want people to feel as they walked through the door?
Hannah Collins: I have spent a lot of time in Mexico and it is such an incredible Country. You know when you’re on vacation sitting somewhere outside and it’s warm and you are relaxed with a great drink in your hand…I wanted it to feel like that! A transformation from SF.
24E: What surprised you about the project from conception to completion?
HC: The space really transformed when we opened up the back windows and skylights and everyday took on a new feeling of lightness and brightness.
24E: What ended up being your favorite design element of the project?
HC: The equipal chairs. I love Mexican Furniture!
24E: Tell us about the walls and the pretty lady.
HC: The mural was done by Machy – a pretty well recognized sf artist. We created the design together as we talked about how I wanted a landscape of patterns weaving through the strong feminine figures. The patterns were pulled from original Mexican textiles and prints.
24E: What is a feature that people may not initially notice at first?
HC: We really tried to layer textures to create a space that felt authentically Mexican. We used plaster walls in the bar area, painted wood walls in front of the kitchen and textured paper walls in the back area. The transitions between the space make the building feel good! I also think the plants really add incredible life to the space. It wouldn’t feel the same without them.
24E: What meal at Flores does everyone need to try?
HC: The cocktails are my favorite part… but the empanadas are incredible as is the Chile Relleno Ahogado which is vegetarian and extremely delicious!
