We love featuring amazing artists and designers coming out of the East Bay and today we have the extremely talented Oakland interior designer, Mead Quin sharing some of her design secrets. Hailing from such a transformative city, Mead’s designs incorporate exquisite taste with a lived-in lifestyle. As a single mother and fine artist, she’s able to find the balance, between functional family spaces and beautifully crafted pieces, just perfectly. Her interiors are nothing short of stunning. We sat down with Mead and asked her the secret to styling a perfect coffee table, her favorite room to design and what inspires her. She shares with us her favorite local store for decor and two never-fail furniture designs that she uses over and over again. She’s spilling a ton of design tips so be sure to read on!
What inspires you about design?
The transformative power of design… I love seeing how thoughtful design can turn a space that feels scattered and unsettled into something that feels like home, is peaceful, beautiful, inspiring and enriching to a person’s everyday life.
What is your favorite room to design and why?
Lived-in living rooms. Many of my clients want living rooms that they can actually live in. It is a fun challenge to find beautifully designed materials that are family friendly and touchable…coffee tables you can put your feet on and sofas you can let your kids climb all over.
Local design source you love?
Coup d’Etat in SF is one of my favorite go-to spots for one of a kind statement pieces.
A piece you use time and time again for projects?
Two favorite items would be the Saarinen Dining Table and Womb Chair. I would include these in almost any project…
What You Need to Style A Perfect Coffee Table:
First, start with a few beautiful books… my current favorites are:
Second, have a candle… current favorites:
Third, you’ll want a tray to pull it all together. And lastly, fresh flowers…peonies if in season.
What do you love about Oakland?
I love the diversity and sense of community most… I love that it isn’t perfectly polished, that you can be yourself and that it is easy to feel at home.
